What is Black fungus?

Black fungus or, Mucormycosis is a rare fungal infection. "Mucormycosis can affect the nose, orbit, eye, or brain. It can even cause vision loss. It can also spread into the lung," Guleria stated, noting that hospitals should have protocols for infection control. Guleria said that secondary infections (bacterial and fungal) are responsible for more deaths.




SYMPTOMS OF BLACK FUNGUS

People who have COVID-19 are most at risk from the black fungus, or mucormycosis. The infection causes the blackening of the nose and discoloration, blurred vision, chest pain, breathing difficulties, coughing blood, and blurred vision. Mucormycosis mainly affects the synuses and the eye, but it can also involve the brain and nasal involvement. Some cases of pulmonary mucormycosis have been reported. The West Bengal Health Department has published an advisory entitled "Mucormycosis-if uncared-for - may become fatal". It mentions warning signs such as redness and pain around the eyes, nose, and throat, and also includes vomiting blood, altered mental status, and general brain functions like amnesia and confusion.

How do I know if I have Black Fungus disease?

Black Fungus disease can be characterized by the following symptoms:

· Swelling of the face only

· Headache

· Fever

· Sinus or nasal congestion

· The nose bridge and upper part of the mouth quickly become severe from black lesions

· Respiratory problems

This is a sign that you have a Black Fungal infection.
