Skin conditions: Normal vs Abnormal

Over our lifetime our skin ages with us. When we meet someone, we often observe their face and skin to determine their age. Simple signs of aging include wrinkles, decoloration, and skin loosening. Such conditions are absolutely normal as you grow older. Black spots, bruises, and moles of different kinds are normal conditions, yet symptoms of different disorders like psoriasis, fungal infections (like Black fungus), etc. Hence, it gets extremely important to observe these conditions and take preventive measures accordingly, before they grow and aggravate the underlying disease. In this article, we will discuss, which of these conditions are normal and which are not.

Cold Sores

Normal: Lesions happening rarely (1 or 2 times a year)

Abnormal: Breakout very frequent (Once a month or more)

Cold sores are due to an infection of the lips, the mouth, or the gums. They are usually small and often painful blisters that almost always go away on their own. However, if they persist, or appear frequently, could be a symptom of an underlying conditions like Herpes Simplex Virus, auto-immune diseases, etc.

Dandruff

Normal: Little Flakes that can occasionally or seasonally appear and can be controlled via over-the-counter shampoos.

Abnormal: Thick, Scaly, itchy patches that are persistent

Mild dandruff is normal and can be a concern that you can change by using certain hair products. But if this condition involves extremely itchy and patchy skin that interrupts your normal way of work and social life, then medical advice should be sought. In such cases, psoriasis is very often mistaken to be dandruff. Psoriasis is a type and symptom of auto-immune diseases.

Black spots on the skin Normal: Age spots, liver spots, hyperpigmentation coming up at any age (especially middle age)

Abnormal: Spots or bumps seeming like a sore and doesn’t heal within three months, flat firm and waxy spots with crusty shell, blistered spots, pain warmth, and redness around the spots.

Normally these blackspots happen due to hyperpigmentation in our skin. These spots are almost very normal to happen since birth or to develop with age. But if these spots are along with the above-mentioned abnormal symptoms, then it could be a case of skin cancer. If you have recently recovered from covid and had unchecked diabetes, it could also be a case of Black fungus.

Excessive Sweating

Normal: Appropriate sweating with emotional or physical actions.

Abnormal: Sweating of underarms, palms, soles, face, and head without any emotional or physical stimulus and which affects your work and social life.

Sweating as a reaction to an actual stimulus of physical or emotional activity, is normal. But when this happens excessively without any real stimulus or more in comparison to the stimulus, it is a sign of hyperhidrosis. This could be a symptom of thyroid problems, diabetes, or infections. Professional help should be sought.
