What is Rabies?
The rabies virus of the Rhabdoviridae famiy causes a progressive, acute disease called rabies. It spreads to humans through the saliva of infected animals, insect bites, or stings. It is usually transmitted by animal bites, such as from stray dogs. It can be classified as a fatal, but preventable, viral disease. If pets or people are bitten by a rabid animal, it can spread to them. The central nervous system is infected by the rabies virus. The virus can infect the central nervous system if the patient does not get the proper medical attention after an exposure. This could lead to brain disease that may eventually cause death.
Symptoms include headaches, fever, excessive salivation, muscle spasms and paralysis. After a bite, or suspicion of bite, the individual should immediately seek medical attention. Rabies is not curable. It is almost always fatal once symptoms start to appear. It can be prevented by taking timely steps and using the correct vaccines, monoclonal antibodies, or immunoglobulins.
What does Rabishield do?
Rabishield 100IU Injection contains Rabies Human Monoclonal antibody. This is used to provide post-exposure prophylaxis in order to prevent the spread of rabies to people who have been exposed to the virus. This injection uses recombinant DNA technology. It does not contain blood serum and has a higher safety profile. It is an IgG1 monoclonal human antibody that binds the extracellular space G glycoprotein.
